How does the tick and flea repellent work?
Both the tick and flea spray and drops use a blend of natural essential oils that repel ticks and fleas. The oil drops can be applied to the dog’s coat or the outside of a fabric collar and provide continuous protection from ticks and fleas. In addition to essential oils, our tick and flea spray also contains all-natural apple cider vinegar that provides an extra layer of protection against ticks and fleas and can be used prior to taking your dog to an area where there could be a high concentration of ticks or fleas (i.e. wooded areas, hikes, dog park, kennels).
The tick and flea spray and drops are designed to work together: the drops provide continuous, everyday protection, and the spray provides an extra layer of protection when taking your dog on a hike or to the dog park.
How do I apply the drops? How about the spray?
The tick and flea repellent drops can be applied directly to the dog’s coat. We recommend applying drops between the shoulder blades, along the back, behind the ears, and in front of the tail. For sensitive skin or additional protection, the drops can also be applied to the outside of a fabric collar (note: the product is oil based, staining may occur). The drops should be reapplied when the smell disappears (approx. every 2-3 days or as needed).
The tick and flea repellent spray should be sprayed over the dog’s entire coat. Be sure to spray all areas including legs and feet (avoid sensitive areas). To avoid getting spray in dog’s eyes, spray some repellent in your hands and rub on dog’s head, ears, and chin. The spray is effective for approximately 24 hours and should be reapplied frequently.
How many drops do I put on my dog?
This depends on your dog’s size. A rough guide is as follows:
5-10 lbs. – 5-10 drops
11-20 lbs. – 15-20 drops
21-40 lbs. – 20-30 drops
41-60 lbs. – 30 drops
61-80 lbs. – 35 drops
81 + lbs. - 40-50 drops
How long will these products last me?
It depends on the dog’s size, the area where you live, and how frequently your dog might be exposed to ticks and fleas. While it might appear small, our 2 oz. bottle of tick and flea repellent oil contains over 1,000 drops! If you have a 50 lb. dog, and you put 30 drops on him every 2-3 days, a single bottle would last you approximately 3 months. Not only are the drops a safer option for your dog, they’re also more economical!
Each 8 oz. bottle of spray contains approximately 900 single sprays, meaning that it if you used 30 single sprays on your dog four times a week, a single bottle of spray would last approximately two months.
My dog has sensitive skin, are these products safe?
The ingredients used in our products are both gentle and safe. You will likely find that our products will not irritate your dog’s skin. In fact, apple cider vinegar is known to help improve skin conditions! We also dilute the essential oils to a level that is very safe for dogs. Undiluted essential oils should never be used on dogs. As with all naturals products, it is possible (although unlikely) that your dog might be allergic to an ingredient in our drops or spray. We recommend testing a single drop or spray on your dog prior to using. If redness, swelling, or itching occurs, discontinue use and contact a veterinarian.
My dog already has fleas, will this product work to get rid of the fleas?
While the spray and drops will certainly help get rid of the fleas on your pet, if you have found fleas on your dog, it is likely you have an infestation in your home. Fleas multiply at an incredibly fast rate, and once they are in your home, more steps need to be taken to deal with the problem. The good news is there are natural methods for dealing with flea infestations. We recommend bathing your dog with a natural flea shampoo and then applying Terra Pet Naturals spray and drops. In addition, all bedding, blankets, and dog beds should be washed with hot water. Spray carpets, furniture, and other areas with white vinegar (test on fabric first) and ventilate area well to quickly eliminate vinegar smell. After spraying carpet, wait for about 15 minutes, and vacuum thoroughly.
I’ve been using your product, but I just found a tick on my dog. Does that mean the product isn’t working?
Although our tick and flea repellents are highly effective and repel the vast majority of ticks, it is possible that once-in-awhile, a tick might still try to attach itself to your dog. If you find this is the case, try applying more spray on your dog, focusing on areas where ticks like to attach (i.e. head, ears).
